Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs will take the podium at 10:45 to make an announcement – pure speculation: Mejias will be involved. The legislator had a tough battle this year and the numbers are still coming in.
Since arriving, he’s spent most of his time in the back room behind the stage along with Jacobs and the party braintrust. He hasn’t been available for comment.
Regardless, the tension of the empty room has been replaced by supporters (many of whom are enjoying the finger food and not-so-nonalcoholic drinks).
Even with the party in swing, people are aware of the stakes: Without Mejias, the legislature could operate a lot differently in the next two years.
