When the matter of taxes is discussed on Channel 12 News Broadcast with Suffolk County elected officials, the issue of taxes comes up. The issue of taxes by Channel 12 News is too often looked on as superficial by many of my friends, family and I because... Property taxes are usually anywhere from 25%-35% of our property tax bill in relationship to our entire property taxes, which include the school taxes. However, when you consider all the ways in which Suffolk County collects taxes from its constituents (i.e., sales taxes, utilities-L.I.P.A., telephone, etc.) and add those taxes onto the Suffolk County portion of the property tax bill, that % people within Suffolk County pay into their Suffolk County government becomes greater. Suffolk County has over 200 ways and means of balancing it's budget, whereas, the school has 2 basic ways in which to balance it's budget, (property taxes and state funding). When you add up all of the monies (taxes) that contribute to balancing the Suffolk County budget and compare all of the money raised by the school system, that % of taxes that comes out of our property taxes added to the over 200 ways in which Suffolk County collects other taxes becomes greater. Many estimates have it that the amount of money people in Suffolk County pay into the Suffolk County coffers exceeds the so-called 25%-35% accepted rule of thumb and is far greater than the school taxes. So please don't always discuss taxes as though the property taxes are the only tax the people of Suffolk County have to contend with. The property taxes may be the most visible, but, it is not the only tax that is hurting people living on Long Island. We all know and are familiar with all of the other ways Suffolk County has and does collect other taxes, fees, fines, etc., from other programs/services. Please include those other taxes in any and all discussions/debates... In essence, many are disgusted with the Suffolk County portion of the property taxes, for the simple reason...It exists ! In the matter of taxes…

I think you are intelligent and have a grasp of the issues. I really enjoyed the segment on healthcare. There was named Gina from Medford that I found to be very ignorant. She chastized government involvement in healthcare, yet she was a proponent of HealthNY and Medicaid. I guess she didn't know that both are government programs. Thank you for bringing out the facts. I personally am a proponent of the Public Option. It amazes me that Republicans champion the free market, yet they don't want people to have a choice when it comes to there healthcare. It also amazes me that they state that the government is going to come between people and there doctor, yet it is the insurance companies that do precisely that. I hope you enjoyed the Holiday wkend. Ciao. Sincerely, Steve Lo Re Dear Ms. Tyrrell:

Comment on Blame it on the Realtors by John http://news12islandvote.com/2007/11/07/blame-it-on-the-realtors/#comment-28 John Mon, 26 Nov 2007 04:39:43 +0000 http://news12islandvote.com/2007/11/07/blame-it-on-the-realtors/#comment-28 I care alot about preserving the pine barrens, but the people of Brookhaven have spoken and they cannot afford a transfer tax, especially at this time. It worked on the east end towns which has alot of money, but in working class Brookhaven it is a different story. Amper and the Society may have been instrumental in preservation of the core area of the pine barrens, but after that, they have been nothing but air. Amper seems strangely silent on projects that have threatened the pine barrens. I cant seem to find anything on trying to stop the monster Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead, the largest project ever built in the pine barrens. That's because the Society and Amper get their money from developers, and they buy their approval from Amper. Tanger's impact to the area has been devastating. Traffic jams and litter have been clogging the Peconic river, as a result of the extra traffic the roads cannot handle. Amper has let us down time and time again. He's nothing but hot air, and actually hasn't done as much to protect the pine barrens as he would like you to believe. It really is time for a more sensible voice for land preservation. The voters understood that Proposal Three, The Brookhaven Transfer Tax, was a BAD deal. The Realtors merely exposed the truth, which is that real estate transfer taxes are an unfair method to preserve open space. (See News12 poll results that confirm that a vast majority of viewers share this opinion) Dick Amper should not blame others for his own failures. The fact that he now supports a bond proposal, which is a more equitable method of funding open space that spreads the cost of this "public benefit" to everyone and makes it more affordable for individual taxpayers, is a step in the right direction.
