It’ll still be a couple hours before Suffolk County GOP candidate for Brookhaven Supervisor Robert DiCarlo knows whether he’s got the support of the voters, but for now, at least he knows he’s got his family behind him.
DiCarlo’s uncle, Vincent DiCarlo, and his cousin’s husband, John Yancigay, are on hand to lend their support despite not being able to vote for him — neither are Brookhaven residents. They’re not worried, though.
The pair told me they have no doubts that DiCarlo can bag a win tonight even without those two votes. “I am not concerned,” said Vincent DiCarlo. “I just sit back and watch.”
The politician’s uncle couldn’t help getting a little nastalgic, though. He recalled that he baptized DiCarlo 50 years ago.

Seen here is the Democratic team for the Town of Oyster Bay. Center is Joseph Terino, Jr., who hopes to unseat longterm Supervisor John Venditto.
Terino tells me TOBAY isn’t dysfunctional like the county government was when the Dems took over earlier in the decade, but there’s room for improvement. If elected, Terino plans on taking a nap, a trip to Disney World, and then putting TOBAY’s foot down to stop the Cerro Wire mall project off of Robbins Lane.
Keith Scalia (left) is running for town council. Does the name sound familiar? Well, it should. His great, great uncle is Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court. This John Adams H.S. (in NYC) teacher says fear not, their politics couldn’t possibly be more different. Scalia has his eyes set, elected or not, on helping out the residents of the Syosset Mobile Home Park (off Jericho Tpke). The property was recently purchased by a developer and Scalia says they’re being unfairly evicted.
Rounding out the team in this picture is Town Clerk candidate Matthew Meng.

He’s new to energy, but far from green in the PR field.
Ed Dumas, Steve Levy’s main mouthpiece for the past four years, is following former Chief Deputy County Exec Kevin Law, now president and CEO of the Long Island Power Authority, to the agency.
Dumas, who will replace longtime LIPA spokesman Bert Cunningham on Nov. 15, says that while he expects a short learning curve, the last four years have been “intense training in crisis management.”
So as we head into the winter season, he says he’s “ready to handle whatever Mother Nature has to throw at us.”

Nassau Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs has returned to the HQ scene, proclaiming the races as tight as expected.
Jacobs’ team bases its speculation on the turnout rates for each party in this election compared to previous years. Legis. David Mejias, perhaps best known for his aggressive run against Congressman Peter King in 2006, has a tough battle on his hands – Jacobs says the numbers are dead even in that race.
Candidate Ali Mirza in the 3rd LD also has a tough battle against GOP incumbent Legis. John Ciotti.
So far the election’s playing out as predicted and the chips could fall on either side of the aisle.

Nassau County Republicans will be watching the election results come in at Mirelle’s in Westbury. The restaurant has hosted the GOP for the last six years. Jacque Laguerre, the restaurant’s proprietor, says he hosts the event not to make money, but to help out the community. He says he is expecting between 200 – 300 people tonight.
While he says he didn’t follow the local races, he says he did vote – for Democratic candidates.

Supporters are slowly trickling in here at the Radisson and a few volunteers are looking to see if their work paid off.
Todd Jones, a law student at Touro, has been out stumping for Supervisor candidate Robert DiCarlo in recent weeks. He’ll be getting an education tonight watching democracy in action.
According to Jones, the community seemed to be quite receptive when he and his team were going door to door. Sometimes, he said they would get responses along the the lines of “Who’s running against Foley? He’s got my vote.”
He added that there was enough anti-Foley sentiment to make them feel good about themselves.
Tonight, they’re just waiting to see if all that work paid off.

Not everything in the media is glamorous. In fact, it can be just the opposite. The polls are open until 9 p.m., and it doesn’t look like any candidates will show up before then. The crew’s been here for several hours at this point and we’re all ready for some action.
To pass the time, N12LI field producer Stacey Halio brought in some liquid energy, courtesy of Starbucks. Reporter Shari Einhorn (left) is focusing in on her coverage of the Nassau Dems, while the rest of us focus on a fun game of hangman.
Stacey’s word choice? “Election.”
Savannah’s, fully equipped with a disco ball, should start hopping soon — stay tuned to this blog for the real action starting shortly.

Before things pick up at campaign headquarters, it’s apparently very important to lay claim to upfront seating. Two supporters of 6th District Court Judge candidate Chris Ann Kelly sat in the fourth row before campaign manager Paul Molloy came to the rescue with campaign signs that made it official.

The ballroom of the Radisson Hotel in Holtsville will be the base of operations for the Suffolk County GOP tonight and it seems to be turning into a home away from home. Party volunteers say they’ve been spending election night here for about five years now.
Despite the familiarity, volunteer Kevin Gorman says it’s been no easy task getting the party wired for the evening. He spent close to two hours setting up the computer and projector in the main ballroom as well as four computers in the Republican command room in another part of the hotel. Adding to the task was the difficulty of patching into the hotel’s WiFi connection.
They want to stay tapped in to the results as they focus their attention on a few high stakes races tonight. Top priority tonight is the possible shift in the balance of power in the county legislature. Democrats have a 10-8 majority right now but Republicans will be looking to regain control tonight.
Also prominent on the GOP radar are the races in Brookhaven. Former Brooklyn state Sen. Robert DiCarlo is looking to oust Democratic Supervisor Brian Foley.

Does he look familiar to you? Well, a double-take is in order. Tonight, 22-year-old Nick Guariglia is attempting to turn an uncommon trick: unseat a popular Republican legislator in the 17th District’s Ed Mangano AND organize the Nassau Democratic Party’s election night extravaganza.
The Savannah’s still empty, but Guariglia, a staff assistant in the party, says the setup is right on schedule.
As for his political aspirations, Guariglia isn’t exactly brimming with confidence.
What are his chances? “Not good,” he admits.
